Phantom Limb Co. – 69º S.

Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922), one of the first polar explorers, forms a link between Groningen and New York in 2011. His life story and quest for the Magnetic South Pole are narratives of courage, endurance, hardship and also of tender humanity. The New York company Phantom Limb Company was inspired by his story and used it as the basis for its beautiful puppet theatre performance.

In conjunction with the world-renowned Kronos Quartet (which produced the marvellous soundtrack) the ThreeASFOUR collective (that designed the costumes), and director Sophie Hunter with additional development by acclaimed director Tony Taccone, Phantom Limb Company continues its trail-blazing activities with Erik Sanko’s fascinating puppets. Against a grandiose backdrop (with a ship and costumes made in Groningen), not only is Shackleton’s journey across Antarctica revitalized but the dazzling series of tableaux vivants also transports you to the ice-cold continent of the year 2011.

69º S. is a co-production of ArKtype, Noorderzon, Grand Theatre and NNT.
